Habit building
The Complete Guide to Building Habits That Last
A practical system for choosing, starting, repeating, reviewing, and restarting a habit.
Start with behavior, not identity
Describe what you will do, where it can happen, and what counts as complete. “Become disciplined” cannot go on a calendar; “write one sentence after breakfast” can.
Use a cue you already notice
A useful cue is specific and reliably present. Attach the new action to an existing event, then keep the materials visible and ready.
Reduce the minimum
Define a minimum version that protects continuity on low-energy days. The minimum is a floor, not a limit.
Review the system
Once a week, examine when the action happened, where it failed, and which friction can be reduced. Avoid changing several variables at once.
Plan the return
Missing is information. Decide in advance what you will do at the next reasonable opportunity and how you will reduce the action after a longer interruption.
