Habit building
Habit Stacking: A Practical Step-by-Step Guide
Attach a small behavior to a reliable part of your existing day and troubleshoot weak habit stacks.
Inventory existing anchors
List events that happen most days without prompting: closing a laptop, feeding a pet, brushing teeth, or starting the kettle.
Match context and energy
Put the new action where its materials, time, and energy requirements make sense.
Use one clear sentence
After I [existing event], I will [specific small behavior]. Avoid adding a chain of five new behaviors.
Diagnose the miss
If you forgot, improve visibility or the cue. If you remembered but resisted, reduce effort or move the action. Those are different design problems.
