Habit building
How to Start a New Habit Without Relying on Motivation
Use cues, preparation, a minimum version, and a recovery rule to make starting less dependent on mood.
Treat motivation as variable
You can welcome motivation without making it a prerequisite. Build the plan around conditions you can influence.
Prepare the first motion
Put the book on the chair, open the document, fill the water bottle, or lay out the equipment. Preparation moves effort away from the decision point.
Write an if-then start
Use a concrete statement: after I finish lunch, I will walk to the end of the street. Ambiguous plans invite renegotiation.
Count the minimum honestly
A small completion is useful when it was defined in advance. Quietly shrinking the habit after avoiding it is different; note that distinction without judgment.
